Introduction to Photography
Exercise 6: Studio Lighting.
Lecture: We all when straight to the photo studio then got started showed the pictures we printed at Photomedia then started to learn how to use the large flashlights.
Pictures from the Studio.
We spend almost an hour just to get the right exposure and the type of lighting we wanted. The goal as to create a rim light around our faces. It took alot of changes to the light settings and angles to create the rim light. Eventually we manage to get it.
The flashlight was set up behind the model at an angle and the power was at 7.2 so that the exposure could be set up at f/16 on the camera. We use the light mater to get an accurate reading. It took many try and error to get it correct. When we got the lighting right all the following pictures were shot at ISO:200, f/16, 1/125

I came up with a series 5 pictures and i posted on fb to see what Mr Vinod had to say about it. After getting his feedback i did some changes and came up with a new series. I decided to do a series of 6 because i felt that it looked nicer with 6 pictures instead of just 5 photos.
My earlier Final 5 pictures.

Final Photos for Theme-Based Project
Rationale.
“Own The Court”
About the photographer:
Amer Eizwann Haziran (b. October 1996) studying in
Foundation in Design at Taylors University Lakeside Campus, Subang. Ever since
I was form 2, I was dragged to join the photography club in school by one of my
friend. From there I actually got hook
on to photography and started to like taking photographs of things around
me. I stayed in the club throughout my
high school years and ended up being the president of the club when I was form
5. I choose Photography as my elective because I wanted to continue learning
about the world of photography in depth.
After 15 weeks of learning I’ve gain more knowledge about photography
then I’ve learn in 5 years of my high school life.
About the photographs:
All of with photos were taken at Bangsar Sports Center
Futsal court. My choices for the final themes were either Sports, Food, Fashion
photography but after a week of thinking it out I decided to go with sports as
my theme. Sports in general are very broad, so I came down to one sport that
was Futsal as my final theme based project.
I choose Futsal because to me it would be easier
because I knew the game. So I can tell what is going to happen next most of the
time. For me when it comes to shooting sports it’s all about the moment. My
challenge is to put an artistic angle to a good moment to produce a good shot
for my final 5 photos.
The first photo was taken at a low angle and the reason
behind that is because I wanted to make it look like he was fully diving towards
the ball. The scary part is I purposely ask another friend of mine to kick the
ball as close to me as possible so that I could capture the moment as if he was
about to catch the ball. In the second photo I wanted to tell the story of
teamwork. A futsal team consists of many players so this wide shot shows few
people in their position as a team finding their way to victory. The third
picture was taken on a really rainy day so the water started to cover up the
pitch. So I took that as an advantage by taking this shot. Playing in the rain
and making moves like that is a dream for most futsal or football player.
Message behind the forth picture is I wanted the viewer to feel the experience
of playing in the rain. The picture shows how when Arieff flipped his hair in
the rain makes you realize that every player has to focus and get your head in
the game. The fifth photograph was taken
to show how its not all about the players on the pitch but the people around
also plays an important part of the game. I took at a very low angle because I
wanted to enhance the highlight on the floor and also it creates a nice rhythm
on the subject because they were siting a line and all of them were looking at
the same place. The last photo is about the weapon for futsal. The shoe is an
important asset to a player. I was inspired by a photograph I saw in nike’s
advertisement and decide to take a similar shot because I felt that it had the
artistic composition.
As for the technical part, most of the pictures were taken
with a high ISO (ex. 3200, 4000, 5000) because I didn’t want the lack of light
be an issue. As for the aperture, majority was between f/4 and f/8 so that I would
have a clear shot and also so that I wouldn’t have such a shallow depth of field.
As for the shutter speed, most of the time was above 1/400 because I wanted to
get a fast movement photo without having the blur movement effect on the
picture. To conclude this, I had a good time producing my final photographs and
I’ve learn so many new things along the way. It totally gave me a new
perspective of sports photography.

Experience:
This week i experience using another set of lighting (flashlight) in the studio. It was a big challenge getting the light the way that we wanted. it took nearly an hour but we manage to achieve the rim light we wanted. Using the flashlight and power bag was a great experience for me cuz i always wanted to use it. so to get to learn the right way of using it was really fun. I had a really hard time picking my final 5. I spend hours sitting down looking at my laptop choosing the perfect series but i felt that looking at the screen is going to be different when its actually printed out. So i went to print all my possible final pictures and arrange them to see which 5 works together. I ended up picking 6 picture for my final theme based project.

Observation:
This week i observe that my knowledge on lighting has gain even more since last week because this week ive learn to use another source of light. I observe that the power bag can give a really specific amount of power you want and the light meter give you really accurate reading on the power of the light that is flashing. I also observe that different model has different effects on their face even though the light set up is the same, due to the different facial structure of each and everyone give a variety of shadow drops and etc on the subject. Another than that i also observe that to create a series does not mean putting together your top photos but to put pictures that has a similar subject to it and tells a story behind all the pictures chosen.
Findings:
I find out this week that the flashlight gives a different effect compared to the previous lighting that we used. (Spotlight & Main light.) The flashlight gives more soft light on the subject and theres no strong shadows dropping on the model. the flashlight also create a better and nicer rim light compared to the spotlight.
