7th November 2014 (Week 13)

Introduction to Photography
Studio Lighting.

Lecture: Today's class started with Mr Vinod roughly showing us what the lighting system in studio works. He showed that each lights has it own name and it's own purpose. Not all lights have to be use when you are doing a photoshoot. only use the lights that helps enhances your subject to make it look better. There 4 types of lights which is the main light, fill light, rim light and hair light. Mr Vinod clearly mention that we should not get confuse between type of light and type of lightings. There are several type of lighting which the names are subjective examples: Remberent Light, Butterfly light, Loop Lighting, Slip face lighting and etc. These lighting will cause shadows on your subject and depending where the light source comes from it determines the volume of a subject. There are few ways of doing lighting. You could use a Flashlight, Flashgun, Spotlight or just as simple as a window light. After all the explanation Mr Vinod took us to the photo studio to clean the place up than start doing a photoshoot of the picture that we have chosen.

Studio Lighting Exercise (not graded)
Period picture.
Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.
Prepare the file with white borders (as directed during the Editing exercise) and print an 8x10 print from Photomedia:

STUDIO SHOTS

- Our task was to re-create the type of lighting in the picture that we have chosen using a main light, a spotlight that acts as a the hair light, background light and everything else.

I was the photographer for Arieff and Samantha.

Arieff picked James Dean as his model reference. We put the main light toward the right side of the model then the spotlight was put in the background. We use a reflector to lighten up the shadows on his face then the shot was taken with ISO 200, f/5.6 and shutter 1/10

Sam chose a Chinese model as her reference. It took awhile for us to position her accurately then we put the main light behind the camera to lit her face up well. Then the spotlight was use as a hair light to added the highlights on her hair. The photo was then taken with ISO 200, f/5.6 and shutter 1/25.

- I could not screen shot the amount of like they got in Facebook because they didnt chance their profile picture.

Experience:
From this week task, i experience that taking pictures in the studio is really fun but really tiring as well. I experience that you cant do studio shooting on your own or with 1 or 2 extra people. You would need a whole crew to help out to make a photoshoot success. During the final theme based project shooting i experience that im familiar to the environment so it was quick for me to adjust my settings but the bad thing was i was running out of ideas to shoot. I really hope by next week i would have my 5 amazing theme based pictures for final submission.

Observation:
This week, I observe that its not easy to copy back the lighting in the studio. Not everyone can pull of a studio portrait due to facial structure. There's alot of element to consider when doing a studio shooting. Make up and hair is very important because it effects the lighting and shadows of the picture. During the theme based project progression i observe that people now know that i invite them to play futsal because i want to do a photoshoot if them so now they pretend and act when they know im about to snap a picture. Those are the type of feeling i dont want because i want them to feel natural so that the picture looks naturally great rather then it looks like it was planned.

Findings:
This week, I find out that every lights in the studio has its purpose and we should always use the lighting to improve our pictures and not just for the sake of using it. From the lecture today i find out things that ive always wanted to know so i was quite happy and i did study abit the links Mr Vinod gave so when he explain it furthermore in class i was not lost. I would understand the things he was saying. From my understanding, Main light is the light that must be first to set up and position. then followed by the fill light which is just to light up the dark shadow area. The rim light is to illuminate the make your model stand out more. The hair light is to basically add highlight to the hair and make it more glowy. The background light is just like its name. It is to shine on the background to add an effect to the photo.
